BMS: Benthic Multi-Coring System

The BMS (Benthic Multi-Coring System) series is a family of remotely operated seafloor coring systems designed for reliability and adaptability in deep-sea sampling. With a proven record spanning decades, BMS drills can be configured to meet specific project requirements, offering both wireline and conventional rock coring options supported by integrated hydraulics, electrical, and telemetry systems.

Capable of collecting samples from hard rock or soft, unconsolidated sediment, each system combines precision mechanics with a comprehensive suite of sensors, cameras, and lighting for full operational oversight. The modular design enables deployment from a wide range of vessels and deck handling systems, making BMS a versatile solution for complex seabed coring missions worldwide.

BMS Case Studies

Standard BMS Seafloor Drill Configuration

The standard BMS configuration uses conventional coring techniques along with a rotary magazine to obtain 20-30 m of core samples from the substrate.

Rated to depths of 6000 m, the BMS set the world record for coring at depth (5815 m) in 2006.

The capability and portability of remotely operated coring systems makes them a cost-effective alternative to drill ships for detailed sampling of the upper layers of the seafloor.

ABMS Wireline Seafloor Drill

The A-BMS is a remotely operated seafloor coring system that employs wireline drilling technology to achieve deeper penetration, faster operation, and higher core recovery than conventional methods. Its modular magazine stores drill tools, rods, and casing, and can be configured to accommodate coring depths of up to 150 m.

Deployed extensively in the Bay of Bengal and Western Pacific since 2011, the A-BMS has demonstrated exceptional reliability and efficiency in deep-ocean geological sampling operations.
